Introducing Famous Hamsters in History (brought to you by State Farm Insurance)!

M.C. Hamster: Rap Talker

The year was 1984 and what is now referred to as “old school” hip-hop, was on the decline. Kurtis Blow appeared in a Sprite ad. Gangsta rap was on the rise. And as the last vestiges of early hip-hop were being swept away, a young hamster from Brooklyn, NY emerged from the depths.

M.C. Hamster, born Skittles the Hamster, became involved in his early teens with the DJ scene in Brooklyn. Under the tutelage of pioneering hamster rapper, WheelSpinna, M.C. Hamster quickly climbed through the ranks to become one of the most influential rappers of his day.

M.C. Hamster’s first commercial success came during the waning days of old school hip-hop. Desperate for a gimmick to sell rap records, Arista quickly signed M.C. Hamster to the label, making him the first non-human rapper on a major label.

His debut album, Cheeks Packed, was released to wide critical acclaim in the hamster music scene but sales among bipedal record buyers languished. Shortly thereafter, Arista dropped M.C. Hamster, and he continued on, eventually releasing his second album, Rodentia on Seed Bell Records.

M.C. Hamster died in 1986 after a tragic overeating incident.
