RamseyEss.com Special Report: New York Comic Con 2009 Day Two

February 9th, 2009 · No Comments

Day Two of the New York Comic Con was a day of learning. Some people in the “Kids Zone” learned that how to swing a lightsaber. Some people learned that after two on Sunday there are many bargains to be had from vendors who don’t want to have to pack the same books they brought with them.

I learned that there is no reason to buy a weekend pass to a comic book convention.

Sunday at the Comic Con features a special upstairs area called the “Kids Zone.” This seemed to be the only place at the convention where I could find anyone who actually wanted to be there. Illustrator Neil Numberman and I scoped out the “Kids Zone.” We then decided that there is no good way to say you’re going to  the Kids Zone, but “scoping it out” is by far the worst way to do so.

Click the link below to see the only interesting thing from Sunday (that’s right, I’m slightly bitter!).

Immediately before we pushed small children out of our way to take this photo, Leonardo walked over to the two “turtle handlers.” Leo tapped the side of his head and then made a “no way” motion with his arms. I appreciated the turtle’s commitment to not speaking while in costume, even when the only people surrounding him were coworkers and two twenty-something guys, but something about this was absolutely hilarious to me.

This joy was killed when I looked at the photo and saw that Raphael was not looking at the camera because he was too busy preening.

Ten minutes or so later, Leonardo returned to his turtle brothers and even the heavens above aligned for our group shot.

Also we saw a woman dressed as enslaved Princess Leia hula hooping. I was too embarrassed to take a photo of her, so you’ll have to imagine that one on your own.

Goodbye, New York Comic Con. You’ve exhausted me in a way that I didn’t know was possible. I will see you  next year.

And not a moment sooner. Do you hear me?
