The Wonderland of Knowledge Wednesdays - “New Year’s Day”

December 31st, 2008 · No Comments

Well, gentle readers, today is the Wednesday where we anxiously wait for 2008 to become 2009. Since my edition of The Wonderland of Knowledge will become 41 years old today, it only seems appropriate that this Wednesday’s edition examine what Volume 9 has to say about “New Year’s Day.”

It was short, and didn’t have any pictures so here’s the whole thing.

“NEW YEAR’S DAY. People long have celebrated the first day of the calendar year. Western nations observe the first day of January, while people who use different calandars welcome their new year at different seasons.”In the United States, New Year’s Day is a national holiday, a time when greetings are exchanged. On New Year’s Eve many parties and church services are held to “watch” the old year out and the new one in. Although January 1 is New Year’s Day in most English-speaking and Christian countries, other groups observe the day which fits with their calendar.”

I love the fact that Wonderland uses phrases like “English-speaking,” “Western nations,” and “Christian countries.” If you don’t fall into one of those categories, you can either get your own encyclopedia or shut up.

Also the “church services” thing kind of surprised me once I thought about it for a moment. Did 1968 church-goers really sit in pews until the steeple bells rang at midnight? Did they listen to the priest talk until 12? Did they really not have anything else they could be doing? Is this still done? Wouldn’t that be really boring? Had alcohol not been invented yet?

So many answers can be found in these books, but they’re never to the questions that I’m asking them.

Happy New Year’s. Get ready for 52 more stupid, stupid things from some 41 year old books.
