The Wonderland of Knowledge Wednesdays - “Fire”

December 10th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Last week on The Wonderland of Knowledge Wednesdays we took a look at the very exciting rocket belt from 1968. This week we look at the very element that makes such a dream a reality (or rather, made that dream a reality, or, would have made that dream a reality if we had rocket belts today, but we don’t).

Of course I’m talking about fire.

The Wonderland of Knowledge does its usual long-winded introduction about the importance of fire throughout mankind and so forth; you were already expecting that, of course. But then we get this:

A. How did this happen? Did she mow over a propane tank? Were early motorized lawn mowers that unreliable?
B. Du Pont had a magazine?
C. Why was she mowing in the middle of a field? That seems awfully suspicious.
D. Why did she have hand extinquisher so close?
E. There is literally nothing in the “fire” article that mentions fire safety. Shouldn’t they have saved this image for “fire extinguishers,” “lawn mower safety,” or “weird blouses?”

Clearly this woman’s husband was cheating on her, and out of vengeance, set his brand new lawn mower aflame. Now, guilt-striken (just look at that dead expression on her face!), she puts out the fire in the hopes of saving the machine.

But she’s too late. The damage has been done.

Did I mention at the top that I was changing the name of this to CSI: Wonderland of Knowledge? If I didn’t, I definitely meant to tell you guys that.
